pg 23 layout draft by CharmQuark pg 23 layout draft by CharmQuark
December sketchdump is probably going to be like 9 MB anyway, so I'm submitting this trippiness on its own.

Final will be in pen, like everything else I ever do... Although this has been an interesting reminder that pencil isn't QUITE as much of a nightmare as I always make it out to be, and its tactility, depth and non-Euclidean potential make a lot of sense for my characters. Meaning Michael.

I like to tell myself that the I Dream of Jeannie layout makes some kind of sense in context, but really it probably doesn't. I wanted to convey a small amount of time passing incredibly slowly, in which Michael doesn't even move and Frankie only gets slightly more annoyed. The moment is significant, but only on the next page.

No Cream albums were harmed in the drawing of this comic.

Me too, loving the layout :B The way they slide over is very sensual

Thanks so much! I love your layouts, so that means a lot. Also, I love your Joyce project! I'm taking a class on Ulysses next semester, so I will finally finish reading it and be able to understand your illustrations--if not Joyce himself. :)

Thank you! Mhhh, don't have high expectations about my illustrations actually fitting Joyce. Or about understanding in general. I solved this problem years ago, by just passing it as I understood it. I'm a pusher of the subjective :D

Aauh that is so beautifully shaded! You have such an enviable sense of light and shade and it really does as you say, bring tactility and depth to this scene. I like the layout a lot, innovative and emotional!

Thankayou much! Yeah, I'm not sure how this is gonna work in pens... This whole comic could probably hugely benefit from pencils or conte, but then, I don't want to go insane, either.

Nicely done! I think the layout works -- the triple-face thing might actually make the moment seem to pass *quickly,* if it weren't for the very still images of Michael's eye and mouth, which kind of slow things down by emphasizing his stillness and quietness. The only thing that messes with my head is how the two parts of Michael's face are aligned, but can't be part of the same image (or else his face is incredibly long!). My brain wants it to be either two parts of the same image, or else for them to be offset slightly, just enough to show that they aren't meant to be contiguous. But that's just my brain reacting oddly to the visuals -- overall, I think it does just what you want it to. I really like Frankie's first expression; it captures a very full mixture of hurt, surprise, and consternation, before the irritation comes to the foreground in the second expression. I'm not sure how to read the third one; it looks almost calm, in contrast to the angry/annoyed words he's saying. Also... um, is this moment leading up to something romantic? Because something about the extreme closeup on someone's lips... just takes the mind down that path...

Riiight. In the final of this I'm gonna try to make it so that the eye and mouth in the background are sensibly and obviously connected--this page is sort of a geometric nightmare and I definitely haven't worked out all the kinks yet. I'd have to get the proportions of the face right while still leaving room for all the other crap and obeying the rule of thirds and making it "read" okay and making the light somewhat aesthetically pleasing. I also think in the final the little Frankie portraits will be less opaque and, well, portrait-like, and so the background image of Mikey will make a little more sense to the eye and also convey more of a pause.

Glad the Frankie expressions read okay. This is the end of a very long argument, so in the 3rd one he's just sort of waiting.

As for romantic...yes but no. XD

I *love* that first Frankie expression so much. Can't you just magically beam it directly into the final version? *big pleading eyes* I think the Frankie portraits are translucent enough -- they seem like it, anyway.

Holy holy shit.

I really love your layouts. It's like panels without panels, I love the overlays, I love the stark lighting, I love the trippy face in the upper left hand corner there with the absurdly beautiful detail on the eyelashes and the eye.

Intense man! So damn good!
